Make safeguarding visible and usable
The safeguarding lead gives athletes, members and parents a known person for concerns. They keep policies, training and required checks current, then follow the proper reporting route when something is raised. In the US, national governing bodies operate within the SafeSport framework and administer relevant processes. The club lead records and routes concerns rather than investigating them.
The honest hours. Quiet periods may need one or two hours a month, while a live concern creates a very different and unpredictable workload.
What the job actually is
Be known throughout the club
Publish the lead's name and contact route so athletes, parents and volunteers know where to raise a concern.
Review safeguarding policies
Keep conduct, anti-bullying, photography and changing-area guidance aligned with the club's current national governing body requirements.
Monitor training and checks
Track which roles need SafeSport training or a background check and watch the applicable renewal dates.
Receive concerns correctly
Listen, make a factual record and use the required reporting route without trying to determine the outcome personally.
Advise board decisions
Raise safeguarding implications during coach recruitment, travel planning, youth activities and communication choices before arrangements are fixed.
Keep escalation routes current
Maintain national governing body and appropriate authority contacts where officers can reach them quickly when a concern requires action.

The checks, in the United States
Here the check is a background check through your national governing body, run by the U.S. Center for SafeSport and your sport's governing body.
There is no single national check. Federal law and U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee policy require each national governing body to run background checks on anyone it authorizes to hold authority over athletes or have regular contact with them. A check searches criminal databases, sex offender registries and county records covering everywhere the person has lived for the past seven years, and it lasts 24 months before it has to be done again.
US Sailing administers checks under that policy. USRowing requires the 90-minute SafeSport Trained course for relevant adults, with a refresher every year, and a background check every two years for referees.
